Rest in Peace, J.D. Salinger

It’s funny how people react when you talk about J.D. Salinger. I’ve been absorbed in some of the web conversations over the last few hours, ever since we first heard that Salinger had passed at the age of 91. It seems, like any icon, there are two schools of thought: those that [...]
TV Shows That Have Turned It Around

Don’t you love it when you watch your favorite shows, they slow down and maybe even become a little boring, and then they manage to turn it around? As a writer, I love that because it’s the mark of great creative people.

I was a big reader even before I started blogging, but obviously once you get established people do tend to send you books. It’s a good thing. Truly.
New Favorite Show: Castle

I have a new favorite show, and it’s name is Castle. Now, don’t get me wrong, we’ve seen this show before. It’s been done. It’s formulaic. But I love it anyways. I love it in part because of the writer character of the show, played by Nathan Fillion.
The Allure of Joan Holloway

Okay, my husband is secretly in love with Joan Holloway. I have to admit that Joan (the character from Mad Men) really is something unique on TV. She’s curvy, independent (as much as you could be in the 60s), and assertive without being bitchy. She doesn’t scheme or trash other women. [...]

I never thought I would say this… but I’ve been bitten. (And yes, the pun is intended.)
Now here’s the thing: Vampires are so not my thing. I could care less. I know they’re really hot right now and if people dig them, rock on with your bad selves. I’m all for [...]
Margaret George’s Mary Called Magdalene

Yesterday I mentioned that I bought Elinor Lipman’s latest book at the store as a brand spanking new hardcover. As I said, this is unusual for me, because I usually shop at used book shops. While I believe wholeheartedly in giving writers their royalties (they absolutely deserve it!) the fact that I love [...]

This past weekend was one where I worked quite a bit. Actually, I worked almost the whole weekend. And needless to say, I was cranky.
So by Sunday I needed some fresh air and a change of scenery. My hubby suggested we go to the bookstore. An actual bookstore. [...]
Star Trek

What a blast this weekend! Took some much-needed time off, visited with my sister, and did fun stuff with the hubby. What could be better?
One of the things we did was see Star Trek. We don’t go to see movies on the big screen that often (frugal folks that we are) but [...]
Seth MacFarlane’s Hulu Commercial

Okay, I’m likely in love with this hulu commercial featuring Seth MacFarlane. I’m not sure if it’s Seth, the quirkiness of an alien in his tummy, or the fact that he was willing to lift his shirt on TV! Plus, I totally dig the ultra-talented, and I think that might have something to [...]
