First Communion Scrapbook

I like to make scrapbooks for people, and these are different every time I do them. It depends on the event and the person and the pictures, and everything else. Recently I made one for my cousin who just had her first communion. She’s just a doll and so sweet. We were there at her big day and took some pictures, but she also had a lot of other pictures from the day that I didn’t have access to. I wanted to take the pictures I snapped and put them in a place she could see them, but I also wanted a book that she could add to. So here’s what I did.

I used a 12×12 size scrapbook, and blew some photos up to 8×10 or 5×7. Some of the pictures were just so cute and I really wanted to highlight them. The first page is a perfect example. This picture really makes me smile. It has great color, but I love the fact that she is smirking, while sitting in a dirty hammock wearing her pretty communion dress. It’s like, she’s glad the hard part of the day is over and she’s ready to PAR-TAY!

On other pictures, I just combined them to tell a story on a page.

On other pages, I just highlighted a few pictures that had special meaning for my cousin.

There are several other pictures, but you get the idea. The very end of the book has a few empty pages:

I put a disk in here with some video and pictures from the day, and also left a few completely blank so she could put her own thoughts, notes, cards, or whatever. This way she can combine the other pictures she has with some of these.

What I liked about the process was that is was simple. It didn’t have tons of journaling or look like a direct mail page, it really was about the pictures telling a story. I think sometimes in scrapbooking we add so many doo dads and embellishments that we lose sight of what the photos say about the day. Some might think this is a boring scrapbook, but my cousin loved it and got what it was all about. She even ran from neighbor to neighbor showing it to people when we dropped it off last week!

What a wonderful memento and gift!

I love the (more) simplistic approach you took.

Lately I’ve been put off by some of the overly-complicated scrapbook pages I’ve seen. I’d pretty much stopped scrapping because I don’t have time to create such elaborate layouts for every page.

You’ve demonstrated how effective even a simple scrapbook layout can be. Thank you!

    Eileen,
Thanks for your kind words. I’m with you, every time I go into the craft store, I see these books with complicated pages and they turn me off. They are so busy that you lose the point of the page. I’m not sure who has the time to do these, but they don’t always sum up the memory like something simple can do.
