Diabetic Misconceptions

I just finished a radio interview with Kim Smith from Introducing Writers and one of the things we talked about was diabetic misconceptions.

One of the hardest things about writing my book was limiting the points to just twenty-one. The other hard thing was making sure I hit on the most common misconceptions about diabetes. But wow, there really are so many! Kim made a great point on the show that sometimes even diabetics have some of these misconceptions. Sometimes even diabetics monitor other diabetic’s plates and judge. It’s something we all do at times. The problem, of course, is that we don’t know what each person does to manage the disease. Diabetes isn’t a disease where if you eat everything right you’re fine. You’re not fine. You may duplicate the same things the next day and have your blood sugars higher than the day before. You may have a low that you can’t explain. We test and test and test and manage. That is what we do. Sometimes, it is a bit too much. Sometimes, we feel empowered.

As more and more people get this disease, it’s all the more important that we really learn about it. Not just how to treat it, but how to treat each other.
