Bangs Like Paulina Porizkova

A few weeks ago I was hanging out with my sister, who is one of those girls who just knows everything there is to know about beauty and hair. You know? I am, sadly, not one of those girls. I rarely wear makeup (and when I do, it’s always the same old thing) and my hair? Don’t even get me started. But lately I’ve been wanted to jazz up my hair and do something different.

"The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion" Costume Institute Gala - Arrivals

My sister experiments with her hair a lot. She has a different color and style just about every time I see her. I think it’s very cool, and this particular time she had a lovely shade of brown with some red in it. I mentioned that I’ve been wanting to do my hair to something similar in color. She said she could do it for me. I should have left well enough alone with the color…. but then we started watching America’s Next Top Model.

Darn that show! We just had it on in the background while we were waiting for my new color to kick in, and here’s gorgeous old Paulina Porizkova, who is actually older than me but looks ten years younger. Darn that woman!

So here she is with her bangs, and I say to my sister, “I want bangs like that.” My sister tells me she can cut my bangs (after much begging on my part) and sure enough, she cuts them and they look nothing like Paulina Porizkova. If Paulina were to walk into my house right now she would ask me what the deuce I was thinking in having bangs like this. But now… here I am, stuck with these ridiculous bangs!

They are short. Very. To make matters worse, after my sister cut my bangs, I took a scissors to them and added more in an attempt to make them look better. (They don’t.) After all this, I’m thinking maybe I should have just let them grow because I am not the type of person to even deal with bangs. One, I have a cowlick, and two, I’m lazy. (When it comes to my hair, at least.)

Bangs or no bangs. The question every girl wonders at some point in her life! Some women decided this early. They have them, or they don’t. I’m the other kind. I have them, grow them, have them longer, have them super long, get rid of them entirely, and have them so short I look like Buster Brown.

For now, I am letting it all grow. But I’ve learned my lesson! No more watching America’s Next Top Model before a moment of hair indecision, and no more letting my sister near me with a scissors.

  1. America’s Next Top Model is one of our favorite shows, too, and I enjoyed reading about your “hairy” adventure. I, too, have bangs, but not all the way across, though I’ve tried them that way. Your humorous experience reminded me of my own worst-bangs event, only my mother was the culprit. The day before my 4th grade school pictures, she cut my hair short, cut bangs, and waved them in from the top and outward at the bottom like backward parentheses. I didn’t realize just how bad they looked until we got my pictures back. After that, I didn’t let mom touch my bangs! Fortunately, hair grows out fairly quickly. Thanks for the funny story and the memories.

    Donna,
Thanks for sharing your worst bangs story! I love that they are immortalized by your school pictures. Yes, hair grows out very quickly – thank goodness!

  2. The storytelling value of this will definitely be worth the time it takes for your bangs to grow out a little! :-)
