A Tudor Weekend
I spent the weekend with the Tudors! (Well, sort of.) Wouldn’t it be great to be able to really say you spent the weekend hanging out with the Tudors? (Unless you’re one of Henry’s wives, that is.)
The Tudors
No, what I really mean is that I indulged in my Tudor obsession quite a bit this weekend. I started watching The Tudors Season Three, and it was every bit as over the top and fabulous as I anticipated. I love how they kind of get the history right, but you don’t seem to care because it’s so well done. When I first heard Jonathan Rhys Meyers was going to play Henry VIII, I thought… wha? But he’s been great at getting to the madness part of Henry. I notice they haven’t really made Henry gain weight yet, which he should be doing by now. Then again, the show is known for doing the Henry story “their way.” LOL! I love it just the same. I’m up to the part where Joss Stone joins the cast as Anne of Cleves. Should be interesting.
The Queen’s Governess
I’m also reading Karen Harper’s The Queen’s Governess. I’m about halfway through and it’s every bit as wonderful as her other stories. The first thing I read by her was The Poyson Garden
, and I was instantly a fan. I loved the Elizabeth I mystery series, Mistress Shakespeare
, and The Last Boleyn
. The Queen’s Governess is centered around Kat Ashley and the author has created an interesting story line involved her, especially when it comes to Tom Seymour. As I said, I’m about halfway through but I suspect this will play into the fact that she testified that there was no wrongdoing between Elizabeth and Tom. If any of you are Tudor fiction fans, I highly recommend it.
Best Historical Fiction Books
It’s no secret that I love historical fiction. So many people ask me which are my favorites, so I created a list over at the Working Writers blog. While my tastes lean toward the Tudor era, I also have favorites by Sharon Newman, Sandra Gulland, Norah Lofts‘ book about Hortense de Beauharnais, and Michelle Moran. Making this list was like giving thanks during the Oscars – you just know you forgot someone as soon as you were finished. Sure enough, after I hit publish I realized I didn’t have anything from Margaret George on there, who is one of my favorite authors. I’m going to have to go back and make another list!
That takes care of my weekend! How was yours?

Have you ever read Anya Seton? My mother-in-law gave me a worn copy of Seton’s book, Katherine, years ago and I devoured it. She’s got lots of other titles available on Amazon that I need to check out. I think she was publishing in the 60s (maybe 70s) and the books available now are reprints.

You know what? I’ve heard of her but have never read her. So you’d recommend KATHERINE, then? I’m going to have to pick that one up. Thanks for the tip.
