Will Everyone Please Shaddup?

I’ll admit that I’m somewhat sensitive to noise. Maybe it’s from growing up as an only child. Or maybe being a writer I just like things quiet. Who knows.

But lately, I’ve had a very hard time finding a space without noise. It all started a few months ago with some road construction. We have three roads that lead to our house and two of them have been under massive road construction for the last couple months. We have to drive way around the city just to go around the block. But the worst of it is the noise.

To put it simply, I can’t hear myself think!

The noise is making it hard to sit down and write. So I decide one day that I will do like all the cool writers in the world and head to Starbucks to write. I’ve done this before. (I can pretend to be cool occasionally. Pretend is the operative word of course.) I find that I can actually get a lot done there. Usually. But not this time.

No, this time the folks behind the counter are laughing and joking and being super loud. How dare they have fun at work! Oh wait… I have fun at work every day. But my fun is quiet. That’s much better. I look at them and silently will them to have quiet fun. But it doesn’t work.

I head home, tell my hubby about my day filled with noise, and he’s sympathetic. Then, he watches TV while I’m in the next room trying to work and all I hear are loud car crashes, screeching daleks, and men yelling on the TV. To which I say, will everyone just please be quiet?!
