New Paintings: Sometimes I’m an Old Woman
This week I started playing with backgrounds, and as soon as I put down the colors I knew what type of picture I would paint over it. I could see the beautiful white and grey hair of a woman set against the background.
New Paintings: Feeling Patriotic
I must be looking forward to Memorial Day, because I've been making all kinds of red, white, and blue things this week.
New Paintings – April 25, 2012
I've been busy this week gluing more glass (bwa hahaha - more and more glass!), but I won't show you that because I really don't have anything that you haven't seen here before. I do have a few new paintings this week, so I will give you a peek at those.
Painted Glass Garden Mushrooms
I've been seeing these really adorable glass mushrooms everywhere. I don't have a picture to show you, but I've seen them at specialty garden stores and craft fairs. They are colorful but small, and whenever I've seen them they're usually grouped together with at least ten or twenty of them. The only problem? They are expensive.
Mixed Media: Faith Love Hope Joy
I'm working on another mixed media painting this week, and yes, in case you're wondering, I'm totally hooked the medium. Remember when I didn't feel comfortable with it? Now, I love it so much I can't even remember what I did before it.
Felt Peep Bunnies
Happy Easter everybody! I pulled out my Easter decorations and this cute little Easter tree that I love, but noticed that it's a little thin on ornaments. What to do? Add some felt Peeps of course!
Gold Glass Sculpture for the House
I was at an estate sale late last year where I found all these cool gold glass items for super cheap. That big bowl you see was just a quarter, and the other pieces were between ten and five cents.
Green Garden Sculptures
Spring has finally sprung! The weather has been just great this past week, and that makes me think of one thing: gluing glass together. Okay, maybe two things: gluing glass together and making corned beef and cabbage. It was St. Patty's Day on Saturday after all! So while I had my traditional Irish dinner boiling away on the stove, I popped outside to make a few glass sculptures.
Mixed Media: I Love How You Love Me
It's funny how the papers you put down on a canvas can influence you when you paint it. For this one, I really liked the music papers to "I Love How You Love Me." I also had some heart scrapbook paper, and a page from a Robert Browning poem.
Mixed Media: Superhero Glasses
I just picked up some 10 x 10 canvasses at Michael's this week, and couldn't wait to break into them. I started by covering the canvas with some different papers, book pages, and music sheets. Then I added some stamps and the beginnings of the face.
Mixed Media: Beautifully Unique
The mixed media picture I'll show you today is a perfect example of if you don't like it the first time, keep layering. I'll show you what I mean. I started with a few papers over canvas. I'm using some of the house patterns from the books I bought at the library sale, some scrapbook paper, music sheets, and pages from other books. Then I added paint layers, this time with some green and purple. And almost instantly, I hated it. I hated the way it was coming out and how it looked. What's a girl to do? I asked my writing partner ...
Blueberry Muffins
One thing the people in my life absolutely love (and sometimes, beg for) are blueberry muffins. I wish I could take credit for this, but I can't. The reason for it is that I have a really great recipe. That's all. (That's the secret to being a fabulous cook, for those of you kitchen novices. Just get a few really great recipes you can turn to.)
Mixed Media: Not That Girl
Remember those canvases we talked about recently? I covered two different canvases with different but similar papers, and last week I showed you the first picture I did, and today I'll show you the second. As you can see, both sets of canvases had some patterns, music papers, and pages from a book on palmistry. In the first picture, I kept that palm highlighted and painted a necklace around it. But for this picture, it's going to stay in the background. First, I covered the canvases with a couple layers of paint. Then, I added some stamps and dots, and a little more paint. Then ...
Mixed Media: I’ll Live the Life
Last week I got a question about layers when it comes to mixed media, and this week I'm continuing with that. Once again, here are the backgrounds I started. I'll be working on one of these for this picture. After I had all the background papers on, I covered the canvas with a wash of light brown paint. I thought it gave a sort-of an antique look. The upper left corner of the canvas had this cool diagram from a palmistry book, so I kept that more visible than the rest of the picture. Then I added more paint layers. Maybe it was ...
Starry Starry Night Cake
If there is one thing that writing about friendship has done for me, it's made me appreciate my own friends even more. I've always been thankful for the friends I have. I'm a big introvert but I do know the value of friends. I like time to myself, but I really enjoy my gal pals, and I'm always amazed at how creative and generous they are.
Mixed Media: Addicted to Love
I'm playing with mixed media this week, and calling this one "Addicted to Love" after Robert Palmer's famous video.
Glass Mushrooms
It's winter, which means I can't do my bigger glass sculptures because the smell and toxic-ness of the glue is too much to do in the house. So I'm experimenting. I'm trying to work on some smaller glass projects so I can use a different glue and do them in the house. Here's the latest obsession: glass mushrooms.
Keep an Eye Out for Someone Special
I got this fortune a while ago from a lunch date with my hubby, and it said "Keep an eye out for someone special." I just loved this thought. I know, Chinese fortunes are dorky and made up, but I dig them anyways. You do too, right? Admit it!
Cupcake Plate Stand
I've returned from my vacation (or more appropriately, staycation) and that means it's back to gluing glass together. My obsession continues!
Eiffel Tower Felt Ornaments
Remember those house ornaments I made with felt? Well I had some leftover and wanted to do another ornament project with them.
Wooden Birdhouse Necklaces
Recently I spotted these adorable birdhouse necklaces in Handcrafted Jewelry, and I knew I wanted to make them.
Interview at Karin Kaufman’s Blog
Hey, be sure to check out my interview at Karin Kaufman's wonderful blog. She asked me a bunch of insightful questions, and one I know that many writers also ask me about is how to manage my time as a writer. I've got a lot of irons in the fire, and I talk about the way I get it all done on Karin's blog. Show her some love!
Felt Ornament Houses
I think I've mentioned here in the past about the homemade ornament exchange that my cousins and I do every year. We're all over the country so it's nice to get something from them made with their own hand every year. It makes me feel like they are right there with me to celebrate Christmas.
Picnic Plate Veggie Stand
As you know, I've been a little obsessed with making glass garden sculptures. So in my quest to continue gluing things together now that the weather has turned cold, I've decided to make a few cake plates.
11 Things I’m Thankful For
A few people have mentioned that they'd like to do a special post today in honor of 11/11/11. I'm all for that! Since this is the month we're usually thankful for things, here are eleven of mine. (BTW, I'm writing these very quickly, so I'm sure I'll finish and then wish I had added something.... but here we go anyhow (in no particular order except probably the first couple...)
Easy Peasy Turkey Cards
I must have a thing for cheesy turkey cards. There is something about Thanksgiving that makes me want to create goofy turkey cards and send them. I love this holiday!
Stained Glass Afghan
It's afghan making season once again, folks. I decided we really needed a new afghan for our front chair. Something smallish that we could just pop on over our legs in the chilly winter months. We have a lot of blues and purples in that room, so I decided to make this Stained Glass Motif Afghan. It was a free pattern, and it looked very easy. One thing I liked about it was that you use a lot of different colors. Sometimes I get bored using the same color throughout. This gave me a chance to change things up. So DH ...
Paper Covered Pumpkins With Poetry
I saw these pumpkins on the Artsy Va Va blog, and really loved the idea. She took Dollar Store pumpkins, a twig from outside, pages from an old book, and some moss to create a new look. I loved what she did, and I wanted to make a few and also add some poetry to them.

Beautiful Words
What does the term “gracious words” mean to you? I like the thought of words filled with God’s grace. God inspires us, and as a result, we speak in a way that is reflective of His love. Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. ~ Proverbs 16:24 This isn’t always easy. When I’m in... [Read more of this review]
I’ll say it again, I love the Psalms. (And you’re saying, yes, we know that already Cherie! Okay okay…) So one thing I’ve been thinking about lately is our growth as Christians. My faith has grown as I’ve gotten older. This doesn’t mean I believe more, because I always believed. What I mean is that as I’ve gotten... [Read more of this review]
No surprise here: the Psalms are my favorite part of the Bible. (Must be that all that beautiful poetry.) So here I am on Christmas Eve and feeling very blessed for my God. I haven’t had an easy life, but He has been with me every step of the way. [Read more of this review] Read More →

It’s Halloween time already, and I’m still wondering where August went. I think that means I am officially like my grandmother, who perpetually wondered where the summer had gone well into the following spring. [Read more of this review] Read More →
I’m a big fan of Emily Dicksinson’s poetry, and this happens to be one of my favorites. There is something very sweet and sad about the poem, and then there’s the amazing meter that makes you think that she might be lonely but she’s trying to make the best of it.
